The step up from level 1 to level 2 is captured in the difference between explain and analyse.
An achieved response at level 2 generally shows that you can identify HOW a writer has used language to meet their purpose.
A merit response will be able to show this analysis of HOW to a convincing level. This might include well developed paragraphs, precise evidence and well expressed comments about the ideas. There will be relevant connections made between ideas, supporting details and new understandings.
Excellence grades represent the top 10% of students. A perceptive response shows insightful and/or original viewpoints that are expressed with clarity.
