connections
AS91104 is internally assessed and is worth 4 credits. You can see NZQA exemplars here.
You need to read or view 4 texts and show that you understand how they are connected to a theme or big idea.
You may use up to 3 texts studied in class, but the idea connecting the texts must be your own.
We will study a variety of short texts, firstly as practice for the external close reading assessment. Then we will study the ways in which the texts could be connected as practice for your own assessment.

War related themes
Our texts in term 1 had a war related theme in preparation for our class work on connections. You do not have to choose a war related theme, but sticking with it will mean that you have the option to use up to three texts that we have studied together.
Hero of War
Tama Tu
Falling Sparrows
Henry V
In term 2 we will look at mainly written texts with a war theme, with a few exceptions.
What I Will
War Photographer
Homecoming
The Things they Carried
I was Only Nineteen
I vow to thee My Country
Churchill - Darkest Hour
Collins - 10 Days to War
Eye in the Sky (external film study)
There are links below to short stories and texts that may be useful in your search for your fourth text. Remember that is okay to use your close viewing film or a personal reading text if it fits your theme. You may also complete a personal reading response on your fourth (self-selected) text.
Your assignment is due in week 10 of term 2.

Resilience = the ability to bounce back from adversity, set-backs. To fight back against challenges. To overcome bad situations and cope with pressure.
Why are some people more resilient than others?
What are the contributing factors that develop a resilient point of view?
Characters
Background / upbringing
Relationships
Supporting traits
Motivation / purpose
What part does chance play in the critical moment?
To what extent do characters make their own luck?
To what extent do resilient characters accept help?
To what extent are resilient characters naturally optimistic? Or creative? Or charismatic? Or dogmatic? What personality traits contribute to resilience?
In what ways do characters overcome external forces such as setting? Poverty? Upbringing? Cultural background?
What part does optimism play in creating resilience? Or is it worse to have your hopes up and then be disappointed? (What is the Pollyanna glad game?)

- Tom Hiddleston in Henry V - St Crispin’s day speech - model personal reading + close viewing
- Hero of War - Rise Against - connections + close viewing
- No Rest by James Brown - connections - themes / ideas
- Grumpy Old Men - connections - themes / ideas
- Piano Practice - close reading unfamiliar texts + connections

For a list of themes and possible texts, this resource is quite useful.
Other examples of connections are listed below. Each one will require at least one focusing question to narrow the exploration. Starting with the phrase "To what extent..." can be a useful way to create an open question. For example, 'female heroes' would become "To what extent are female heroes in texts portrayed as vulnerable?"
- teenage rebellion
- technology
- conflict in relationships
- dystopian futures
- justice; injustice; truth; dishonesty; corruption; crime; punishment
- influence of the media
- leadership
- stereotypes
- bullying

- personal reading
- close reading of visual texts
- close reading of unfamiliar texts
